Base Footprint Area

Base Area = Length × Width

This determines the flat, two-dimensional square footage of the building's footprint or the attic floor.

Pitch Multiplier

Multiplier = √(1 + (Pitch ÷ 12)²)

Since sloped roofs cover more area than flat ones, we use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate a multiplication factor based on the roof's rise over run.

Why does roof pitch affect insulation calculation?

A pitched (sloped) roof has more surface area than a perfectly flat ceiling underneath it. If you are insulating the actual roof line (rafters) instead of the attic floor (joists), you must multiply the building's flat footprint by a pitch factor to get the accurate square footage.

Should I insulate the roof deck or the attic floor?

It depends on how you use the space. If the attic is unfinished and unconditioned, it's usually best to insulate the attic floor. If you use the attic as living space or store sensitive items, you should insulate the roof deck to bring the attic into the thermal envelope of the house.

What is R-value?

R-value is a measure of thermal resistance—how well a material resists the conductive flow of heat. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. Different materials (fiberglass, foam, cellulose) provide different R-values per inch of thickness.

How many square feet are in a standard roll of insulation?

While it varies by brand, thickness, and material, a common standard roll of fiberglass batt insulation covers roughly 40 square feet. Our calculator provides a basic estimate based on this average, but always check the specific product packaging.

Does framing reduce the amount of insulation I need?

Yes. Rafters and joists take up space (usually about 10% of the total area). While this calculator gives you the gross area, you might need slightly less material than the gross area suggests. However, it's generally best to order based on gross area to account for off-cuts and waste.
